Starting an E-commerce Business in India

Planning to start your own online business? It’s easier than ever. Think of it as setting up your own store in the streets, except you get to do it at a fraction of the cost of physical store setup, you will be available 24/7 for your customers, and the market has millions of people who could be interested in buying from you.

The best part is that with the correct marketing approach, you too can take your e-commerce store or even a simple idea into a powerful venture. If you are not sure about where to start, we have created this simple yet detailed guide on how to set up your e-commerce store in India. Read on.

Select Your Niche

Before you get into the legal details, ask yourself, “What am I going to sell?” The online market is vast. The competition is fierce. And every e-commerce store owner is trying their best to rank high, attract the right audience, and increase conversions.

Certain niches, including beauty, pets, and health, already have thousands of competitors. Broad categories are no longer a smart option for new brands. You should find a specific niche, such as summer wear for kids, or sunscreens for sensitive skin, rather than general categories, like clothes or beauty products.

Choosing Between Marketplace and Your Own E-Commerce Store

The next big question is, where exactly will you sell? You have two options, and you can incorporate both gradually. Marketplaces, like Amazon and Flipkart, and third-party platforms that connect vendors to customers.

They are already trusted, have large audiences, and a proper system that handles logistics, shipping, and more. The catch? You end up paying significant fees. Besides, a third-party e-commerce marketplace is a full house of competitors.

You can build your own e-commerce store. With your own store, you become your own boss. You decide the terms & conditions, what to sell, how to sell, and who to sell. The biggest challenge is bringing your own traffic. You can start with a small e-commerce website and scale gradually as you learn your customers’ buying patterns.

Sourcing Your Products

No need to have a warehouse with a huge inventory. The biggest benefit of starting an online business is that you can start small. You can even source your products from a wholesaler initially or create a couple of customized products (if you are in a customized business).

Customers value reliable businesses. On-time deliveries, high-quality products, prompt replies, and an impressive customer support service are what they are looking for.

Register Your Business

To build a legitimate business in India, you need to complete a few legal requirements. Start with GST registration, especially if you plan on selling across states. Get a shop license. Set up your current bank account that you can use for payments.

If you are running your business as a sole proprietor, the above-listed registration, i.e., GST, current bank account, and license are enough. If you are starting a Private Limited Company or LLC, you may need to register your business with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA).

Setting up Payments

Integrate a payment gateway into your website. Razorpay is an excellent choice. It allows you to accept payment from multiple sources, including digital wallets, UPI, bank transfers, and more, within seconds. Create a simple and quick checkout page. Remember, a lengthy and complicated checkout page can lose sales. So, keep it simple and transparent.

Choosing a Delivery Partner

Then, you need to find a reliable delivery partner. If you have your products listed on third-party e-commerce platforms, you can skip this step. If you have your own website, you can work with Delhivery, Blue Dart, or Ecom Express. No matter how great your product is, your customer won’t like your service if you delay shipping. Likewise, poor shipping, such as broken products, missing items, or unprofessional delivery, can turn your customers away from your business.

Marketing

This is the game-changer. All your efforts in starting a business, registering it, sourcing products, and finding delivery partners will be useless if you don’t attract the right audience. This is where many people struggle, but it’s also the best opportunity for new businesses to connect with their target audience and build a solid presence for their brand.

You can use search engines, social media, email, and other online platforms for marketing. Focus on storytelling, communication, and engaging content. If you want quick results, targeted ads can work wonders. However, you don’t necessarily have to spend thousands of dollars on advertising. Consistent practices, such as posting content regularly, can generate good results.

Final Words

The harsh truth is not every business performs well from the start. Some struggle with repeated returns, while others experience difficulty reaching the right audience. Businesses that thrive are the ones that stick around, learn, and adapt. Remember, consistency is the key.
